FRACTIONAL CMO
For B2B companies in the STEM sector

Strategic marketing leadership.
As much as you need.

As a fractional CMO, Dr. Ulrich Sperling joins your leadership team, taking responsibility for marketing strategy, positioning, and aligning marketing and sales for growth.

A fractional CMO is not a consultant who makes recommendations and then leaves. They are not an external service provider who simply executes campaigns. They assume strategic responsibility—permanently, on a part-time basis, as an integral part of your leadership team.
Investment: CHF 6,000 - 12,000 per month
Minimum duration: 6 months
The problem

When marketing becomes a top priority – but no one has the time for it

In many growing companies, the expectation is that everyone should do marketing; in the end, no one does. The CEO thinks strategically, but lacks the time for execution. The product is compelling, but the market never hears about it. Sales is fighting hard, but lacks the necessary support.

This leads to reactive marketing: a trade show here, a new website there, a campaign every now and then. What’s missing are clear priorities, measurability, and a system.

What’s missing isn't another tactic. What’s missing is leadership.

That is exactly what a fractional CMO provides, without the cost and commitment of a full-time hire.
What's changing

What changes when marketing takes the lead

A fractional CMO transforms marketing from a collection of activities into a guided business function. This has tangible consequences.
Positioning and differentiation
The company knows what it stands for and communicates it consistently.
Customers immediately understand why they should choose this company.
Alignment of marketing and sales
Marketing and sales work toward the same goal.
Sales gets the support it needs.
Conversations become easier, and cycles shorter.
Clear priorities
Instead of many half-finished initiatives, we focus on a few consistently executed measures.
Resources are invested in what actually works.
Marketing as a leadership priority
Marketing is no longer spinning its wheels.
It gains direction, momentum, and drive.
Knowledge transfer
We build and mentor internal teams.
The company gains marketing expertise, becoming independent of agencies and external service providers.
part of the leadership team

How we work together

The fractional CMO works as part of the leadership team, with a regular presence and clear areas of responsibility.
Scope
One to two days per week, depending on the size and stage of the company.
Rhythm
Regular meetings with the CEO and the leadership team.
Clear priorities per quarter. Ongoing alignment with marketing, sales, and product.
Duration
Minimum of six months. Many mandates run longer.
For growing companies, it can make long-term sense to fill this leadership role permanently.
The first 90 days
Analysis of the current situation. Interviews with customers and key stakeholders.
Positioning and messaging. Development of a marketing roadmap. Initial quick wins.
Because I only take on two to three mandates at a time, my capacity is very limited. It is worth reaching out early, even if a mandate is not scheduled to begin for several months. I maintain a waiting list.

Is a fractional CMO right for you?

A fractional CMO is the right fit if your company needs strategic marketing leadership but isn't quite ready for a full-time hire. Or, if you are looking for someone who doesn't just think, but also executes. A 20-minute introductory call will clarify whether this type of collaboration is a good match for your situation.
Identify barriers. Eliminate them. Grow.
